SANRIO: THE PERFECT BALANCE BETWEEN TRADITION AND INNOVATION

The evolution of character licensing, through the success stories of Hello Kitty and Mr. Men Little Miss

If we think of a Japanese character par excellence, Hello Kitty, the POP icon of Sanrio, famous all over the world for more than 45 years, immediately comes to mind. The business of the Japanese multinational is based on "social communication", to foster communication, while remaining faithful to the original motto "small gift, big smile".
Sanrio offers a wide and varied portfolio, able to win generations of fans, different in age and socio-cultural background, but united by the sharing of universal values such as kindness, friendship, inclusion and the enhancement of diversity.  From the classics My Melody, Bad Badtz Maru and Kerokeroppi, to the new and irreverent Gudetama and Aggretsuko, up to the British icons Mr. Men Little Miss.

Buon compleanno Lele!

A seguire, "La gazza ladra" (1964).

How has the rise in comics affected the agency business?

There has been a significant rise in the demand and production of comics in the last few years. According to Publisher’s Marketplace agents sold 205 graphic novels to US publishers from June 2020 to June 2021, 152 in June to June 2019 to 2020, and 93 from June 2018 to June 2019. That is a tremendous increase. This panel looks at how literary agencies have been effected and how they are keeping up. Have they been able to find works and the talent easily? Are they finding all publishers open to this new medium or just some? Are editors easily receptive to projects and experienced enough to judge them?

Silent book. Destinazione Lampedusa

Poetry for Young Readers

Poetry has really left its mark on this edition of Bologna Children's Book Fair. Most of the many books submitted for the BolognaRagazzi Award were published in 2020, showing the enormous - and to many surprising – interest in the genre. What does this signify? Perhaps that Bernard Friot's manifesto ‘Universal Rights to Poetry’ has now been widely accepted? That the child is now considered mature enough to appreciate rhymeless poetry, all linguistic experience and content – as in fact the winning book declares? The refined scholar, Morag Styles will help us try to answer these questions.

Poetry will continue to be a key focus also in the future thanks to these magnificent books, which are also beautifully crafted, a feature that is always considered at Bologna Children's Book Fair.

Pianeta Storie- Episodio Mentre tu dormi

POETRY PARTY - 2021 BCBF FINAL EVENT

This edition of Bologna Children's Book Fair celebrated POETRY.

The BolognaRagazzi Award jury of experts met, discussed and selected the winners from the very many poetry books for children and young adults submitted by publishers from around the world.

The category was such a success and the experience so exhilarating that Bologna Children's Book Fair has announced it would be prepared to make Poetry the special award category also for 2022, encouraging publishers to extend their reach further into the genre.

We need more poetry, words, languages, rhymes and free verses – ‘poetic toys’ as Gianni Rodari would say - for children and adults to enjoy together.

As the final event of the 2021 BCBF edition, our Poetry Party has brought together many countries and many languages. This special choir of voices is a truly fitting finale for the 2021 Bologna Children's Book Fair as we sign off until next year.

Who joined us?

María Teresa Andruetto, Ērika Bērziņa, Francesco Chiacchio, Nicola Cinquetti, Joseph Coelho, Adolfo Córdova, María José Ferrada, Bernard Friot, Juan Palomino, Alessandro Riccioni, Anna Vaivare, Silvia Vecchini, and many more.
