From West to East: Webtoon, the New Content Business Game Changer

Originating in South Korea, the webtoon industry has expanded into Japan, becoming a new form of digital content consumption. While webtoons in Korea have developed as a studio-driven entertainment sector similar to animation production, Japan’s approach reflects a strong cultural respect for individual manga creators, leading to a different development model. Interestingly, this approach shares similarities with European comic production, which, like Japanese manga, differs from the large-team production style common in the United States. Through collaboration between Japan and Europe, webtoons have the potential to become a major innovation in the global comic industry. With the rapid progress of generative AI, creators may better protect their copyrights while expanding webtoons into vertical short-form animation. This session explores the future possibilities of webtoons from the perspectives of Japan and France, each rooted in unique comic traditions.

The Hard Truth about Transmedia: What Works. What Doesn’t

Everyone wants IPs that expand across media. Most misunderstand what actually makes it possible. In this talk, Christian Fonnesbech frames how transmedia success really happens. Drawing on years of working with franchise teams, game developers, and publishers, he breaks down the false assumptions and IP-building mistakes that limit a project’s ability to expand. Why do projects fail when they move across media? What gets in the way of long-term value? And how do early creative decisions shape an IP’s future more than most realise? A sharp, experience-driven talk for anyone trying to build IPs that don’t just launch, but last.

How to Assess the Risks Associated with Bringing Licensed Products to Market

Bringing a licensed product to market is never without risk — and in the toy industry, the margin for error is especially narrow. From brand compliance to international safety regulations, licensing professionals face mounting pressure to get it right before products reach the shelf. This panel aims to examine how companies can proactively identify and manage risk throughout the product lifecycle — from early-stage compliance and supply chain due diligence, through certification for global markets, to recall preparedness. Drawing on Intertek's expertise in testing, inspection, and certification, the session will offer practical insight into building a safer, more resilient route to market for licensed products.

It’s a straightforward discussion about growth, change, and the future of licensing for independent agencies.
