BRAK

PUBLISHING ACTIVITY

BRAK Publishing House was founded in 2015, when it published the first ever foreign translation of the picture-book The War that Changed Rondo by Romany Romanyšyn and Andrija Lesiv, awarded the prestigious Ragazzi Award at the International Children's Book Fair in Bologna. Later, notable foreign titles were added, such as collections of prose by Ukrainian writers Taras Prochaska and Serhijo Žadan, an illustrated selection of short stories by Franz Kafka, a translation of the important comic strip Maus by Art Spiegelman, Nostalgia and Solenoid by Romanian author and Nobel Prize aspirant Mircea Cartarescu, Walden or Life in the Forest, and books of contemporary Arabic literature in the Dezorient express edition. In recent years, the publishing house has also begun to focus on children's readers. In 2020, the ALMA - Authors' Literature for the Little Ones edition was launched, which includes books such as Moko the Dog and His Eye by Mirka Ábelová, The Last Permonik and Bubác by the duo Tereza Olhová and Eva Škandíková, Krutá Marta by Marek Vadas and Daniela Olejníková, or the translation literature The Sea is Round by the Swiss author Sylvia Neeman or Shadows in the Chair by the Icelandic author Gerður Kristný. BRAK also focuses on translations of graphic novels, but does not leave out the original ones. The editorial plan of comics publishing is mainly focused on important contemporary European works, thanks to which BRAK was the first Slovak publishing house to receive a grant from the European Commission EACEA. Among the original comics, the first Slovak edition of the comic RUDO by Daniel Majling should certainly not be forgotten, as well as his other works and Ema sa má by the Czech author Iveta Merglová.
