The publication 150 years ago of Alice in Wonderland marked not only the appearance of one of the most remarkable books ever written but also the beginning of a completely new kind of book for children – different, creative, bizarre, mysterious. Nor was it a work strictly to its particular historical cultural context, but one that was to be translated all over the world, constantly reillustrated, becoming mmortal.
Together with its specialist public the Bologna Children’s Book Fair will celebrate the anniversary of a masterpiece marking the beginning of books for young people that for a century and a half have enthralled children and adults around the world.

A selection of the most famous editions of Carroll’s masterpiece illustrated by great illustrators. From the very first editions illustrated by Tenniel through to contemporary versions by Anthony Browne, Nicole Claveloux, Helen Oxenbury and Lisbeth Zwerger, Alice has challenged many illustrators down the years. She has taken on many guises: young child, little girl, elegant and sophisticated, endearing scamp. An iconic character, Alice embodies childhood, as surprising as it is elusive, living in wonderland where even thoughts can be turned into play.
