In New York, some children have access to the latest smartphones, while others don't have access to the Internet at all. Libraries are re-considering what we mean by "reading" for kids, as the ways, places, and types of reading expand from print books to teen fanfic, from manga to the New York Times.
What matters is getting kids to read at all: on subways, at the grocery store, in the home, and in the library. We threw out old conceptions, and returned to basics: building literacy through practice.
Peter Brantley, Director of the Digital programs, describes the new mindset of the reading fostering, which has been adopted by the New York Public Library during the Summer Reading Programs.
