Illustrators for Gianni Rodari. Italian Excellence

2020 will mark the centennial of the birth - on 23 October 1920 - of Gianni Rodari. Bologna Children’s Book Fair takes the opportunity of this anniversary to honour one of the most innovative children’s authors, the first Italian to win the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Award in 1970.

Re-printed year after year, Rodari’s works continue to be re-interpreted by great illustrators. Indeed, the Italian illustrators who have interpreted Rodari over the years will be the theme of the new Italian Excellence exhibition, first staged in 2015 and presented in 10 countries to great acclaim.

Entitled “Illustrators for Gianni Rodari. Italian Excellence”, the exhibition will be inaugurated in Portland, Oregon, after which it will travel to San Francisco early in the new year, and subsequently presented at BCBF at the end of March.

The exhibition has been organized together with the San Francisco Istituto Italiano di Cultura, with the support of the Emilia-Romagna Region and in partnership with the Cities of Bologna and Portland, Oregon, the Consulate General of Italy in San Francisco, the Portland Art Museum and the Portland-Bologna Sister City Association (PBSCA).

Illustrators for Gianni Rodari. Italian Excellence will be curated by the Cooperative Giannino Stoppani/Accademia Drosselmeier and will present works by twenty one Italian illustrators. Ranging from historic figures and famous contemporary artists to the younger generation, they are: Bruno Munari, Emanuele Luzzati, Altan, Beatrice Alemagna, Gaia Stella, Olimpia Zagnoli, Manuel Fior, Alessandro Sanna, Valerio Vitali, Simona Mulazzani, Chiara Armellini, Anna Laura Cantone, Fulvio Testa, Maria Chiara Di Giorgio, Giulia Orecchia, Nicoletta Costa, Federico Maggioni, Francesca Ghermandi, Pia Valentinis, Vittoria Facchini, and Elenia Beretta.

Each illustrator is represented by three works, which are included in the catalogue published by Einaudi Ragazzi, holder of the world rights for Rodari’s writings.
